Taipan is a thermal inelastic instrument that operates two types of spectrometer: a triple-axis spectrometer and a low energy band-pass angle integrated spectrometer - the so-called Beryllium filter spectrometer. Studies range from solid state sciences, geo-, space, and environmental sciences, through to engineering sciences and biological sciences. In fact the work carried out on Taipan has direct impact on many industries. A current stumbling block to be addressed is that of spectral interpretation which has to be couched in terms of quantum mechanics. Much work is focussed on highly accurate numerical studies. As a stepping stone to such work analytical approaches yield deep insight that can be used as a start to explore and understand the fundamental science under investigation. The study of hydrides forms a significant part of the work done using the Beryllium filter spectrometer. A novel analytical approach is used to derive equations of total energy for a number of simple systems showing that several observables are reasonably predicted, such as zero point vibrational frequencies. Furthermore the protonic charge appears to be a driver of the structure of each of the hydrides presented.
